The two flanges on most threaded reducing flanges have a different number of bolt holes as indicated in the table below. When this occurs, all adjacent holes DO NOT straddle a centerline common to both flanges. A notch or mark on the O.D. of each flange is commonly used to indicate the centerline of the fitting. An alternative method is to find the parting line on the body of the fitting made by the casting process. Once the centerline has been established, there are four possible positions, each 90 degrees apart, to correctly install the reducer which insures matching the centerlines of adjacent piping.
